HAMDEN — A town man was arrested Thursday after allegedly mistreating four pit bulls, including one that had to be put down because of “his grave medical condition,” according to police.Capt. Ronald Smith said in an email that officers responded to a Rockview Road home in July 2020 for a report of multiple sick dogs.

“Animal Control Officers located an older Pit Bull that was severely emaciated. The dog was infested with fleas, dehydrated and ‘appeared weak.’ ACO’s further located 3 younger Pit Bulls that were suffering from several medical conditions, including, skin inflammation, severe dermatitis, lung worm and flea infestation,” Smith said. “We sadly report that the older Pit Bull had to be humanely euthanized due to his grave medical condition.”

After an investigation from former Hamden Assistant Animal Control Officer Parris Gibbs, police secured an arrest warrant for Edward Chieppo, 34, Smith said.

Chieppo is charged with four counts of cruelty to animals. He was released on a $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Meriden May 13.
