DESPP reported a 36% INCREASE in animal cruelty.
DESPP reported a 36% INCREASE in animal cruelty.

Last week, the CT Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection released new data which showed a 14% decline “serious crimes”.

While that is a promising stat, there was another number that stood out to me.

DESPP reported a 36% INCREASE in animal cruelty.

36%.

Let that sink in.

The reality is that the number is likely higher because those are only the cruelty crimes that we know of. Think about all of the abandonment and cruelty cases that go unnoticed or unsolved.

Our state and local animal control officers need to be allowed to do their jobs.

They need proper training.

They need to be recognized as police officers.

Most importantly, they need to be supported by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture to arrest people who are accused of such heinous crimes.

Our state judges need to hold people accountable and apply the proper punishment.

36% is unacceptable.
