Middletown police are looking for the person responsible for abandoning a dog in McCutcheon Park at Crystal Lake.

The dog, who police have named Chucky, was found on Halloween.

Police estimate he had not been groomed in over a year. They said it took a team of people over two hours to shave him.

They also believe Chucky had been kept in a crate or a confined space for an extended period.

“It was difficult to sedate him because we could not get a syringe through the thickly matted fur,” police said in a Facebook post. “It was so bad that he was barely able to move his legs when walking.”

Chucky took some time to adjust, but is a sweet and lovable poodle mix, according to police.

He is not currently up for adoption as he takes time to recover.

Police are asking anyone who has any information on Chucky’s owner to call them at 860-638-4030.

Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates is offering a $5,000.00 reward for information leading to an arrest.

my prayers are they catch the person who dumped this poor animal. I would like to see much stiffer laws for animal abuse and dumping. They cannot defend themselves and it is up to caring people to protect them an make laws that truly punishes these people to the fullest. There are so many places that step into help home and relocate animals there is no reason to dump them. When taking on pet one should also be responsible enough to care for it or if they can't rehome it, NOT dump it.

Maybe you can offer him a soft bed, a blanket and a cuddly stuffed animal to help give him some comfort. Thank you for your care of him.
